FAQs

  • What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow known as Qi (pronounced "chee") through the body that is responsible for maintaining a state of homeostasis or optimal health. Disease or pain is viewed in Chinese Medicine as blockages in the body that cause disruption of the energy flow. Acupuncture treatment includes the practice of penetrating specific points on the body with thin, single use metallic needles or pins (1/10th size of a hypodermic needle!) which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner's hands or with electrical stimulation.

  • How does Acupuncture work? Following a thorough background of your main issue and overall health assessment, treatment is provided over specific acupuncture points on the body. Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals, such as endorphins, into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain to calm down your nervous system and activate your parasympathetic system (that system in charge of “rest and digest”). These biochemical changes stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. By applying acupuncture to certain points it improves the flow of Qi or blood and reduces blockages or kinks in the body to decrease pain or disease.

  • What can I expect from my first treatment? Your acupuncturist will ask you a thorough background of your health history with an emphasis on the main issue you are looking to address. This includes diet, medications and lifestyle aspects. After the intake, you will receive a 30-45 minute treatment. Total time is approx. 75 minutes for an initial appointment. Follow up treatment sessions are 60 mins. Please allow for additional 20 minutes if seeking a rehabilitation program in conjunction with acupuncture treatment.

  • How many treatments are expected to reach recovery?

    • It is important to understand acupuncture is a medicine. One would not feel better after taking medication such as antibiotics or antidepressants a single time. Depending on length and severity of the issue you are looking to address is dependent on the treatment/recovery course. For example: You have an acute condition (recent onset 0-3 months) of low back pain. Your intensity of pain is at a moderate level . You do not have many other complications in your health history. Treatment course is estimated at a rate of once per week over 3-5 weeks. *Women’s health / Fertility treatment courses are estimated at weekly for 3 cycles to obtain results (approx 12 sessions)

  • Is Acupuncture safe?

    • Yes, when performed by a licensed Acupuncturist. Your acupuncturist will review possible side effects during your free phone consultation or initial treatment.

  • What does Acupuncture feel like?

    • Acupuncture is done using with tiny needles, that are more the size of pins (1/10th of size of hypodermic needle!) . Most people report feeling minimal pain as the needle is inserted. The needle is inserted to a point that produces a sensation of pressure or ache. If you are needle sensitive or require non-insertive techniques, Japanese Acupuncture is a great style to use.

    • Needles may be heated with moxibustion during the treatment or mild electric current may be applied to them. Acupuncture is commonly reported by patients as relaxing or energizing.

    • Your practitioner is certified in Clean Needle Technique and follows state, national and FDA guidelines on sterile use of needles. The FDA regulates acupuncture needles just as it does other medical devices under good manufacturing practices. Acupuncture needles used in your treatment are single-use and follows standards of sterility.
