Chinese & Orthopedic Style Acupuncture

Chinese Acupuncture style is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Treatment is based upon Chinese medical diagnosis developed following initial intake/interview and full assessment with the patient. It is confirmed through evaluation of tongue and pulse characteristics. Treatment is based on the root of the imbalances determined by your acupuncturist. Treatment includes specific acupuncture points selected based on imbalances or blockages causing symptoms of pain or disease. Modern theories of acupuncture claim that the needles affect the nervous system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, and the electromagnetic quality of the interstitial fluid at the level of the fascia. This growing body of modern theories indicate that the needle stimulation increases the natural release of endorphins within the body, which mitigates pain and promotes overall health.

Orthopedic style acupuncture involves a musculoskeletal approach to conditions such as ligament tears, ACL-replacement, arthroscopic surgery, knee replacement, arthritis, tendonitis, bone spurs, repetitive stress pathologies, postural stress pathologies, sports-related trauma, auto accident related trauma, nerve pain, pinched nerves, myofascial pain, myofascial contracture, pre- and post- surgery rehabilitation. Treatment is frequently accompanied with sports taping (Rock tape is commonly used in this clinic) and development of an individualized home exercise program to target specific needs and prevent re-injury. Sessions are all offered in a private setting.

Japanese Style Acupuncture

This style of acupuncture is often referred to as “meridian therapy”. Diagnosis includes more palpation along the back, abdomen and various points along the Acupuncture meridians of the body to determine the root cause of disease or pain. In contrast to Chinese style Acupuncture, needles are inserted more shallow and thinner needles are used. Various tools (see above) are used in lieu or in conjunction with needles. This style of acupuncture is very good for those with sensitive energy, needle sensitivity or children (who may require the use non insertive tools over acupuncture points if under the age of 10). Sessions are offered in a private setting.

In addition to thinner needles, Japanese style uses various non insertive tools that are good for children or those with needle sensitivity. Non- insertive tools above include a teishin, ibuki moxa and a tiger warmer device.

Chinese Medicine Modalities

Moxibustion

Moxibustion (moxa) is a common therapeutic technique frequently included in your treatment session. It involves using an herb called mugwort, or “artemesia vulgaris” that is burned on or near the body usually at acupuncture points. It has a penetrating heat effect to improve circulation locally or throughout an acupuncture meridian. It also expels internal cold from the body causing painful conditions or boosting overall immunity. Common conditions used for: joint or muscle pain, asthma, diarrhea, vomitting, gynecological disorders and cold/flu. Moxa comes in many different forms (see below).

Cupping Therapy

Suction or glass cups are applied to desired areas of the body by creating a partial vacuum when placed on the body. This applied suction increases circulation by dilating the capillaries to promote lymphatic circulation. This method of treatment is used to regulate the immune system and control inflammatory responses. Cupping is used in more than 60 countries today for conditions not limited to, but including, headaches, musculoskeletal pain, respiratory conditions, digestive problems, hypertension, infertility, cough, common cold, low back pain. Cupping therapy is best applied by a licensed acupuncturist or TCM practitioner for appropriate dosing of suction, length of treatment and adherence to contraindications as indicated by underlying Western and Chinese Medical diagnoses, medications or skin disorders. Sessions are offered in a private setting. Patients may receive followup treatments for cupping therapy only, excluding acupuncture.

Gua Sha Therapy

Gua Sha therapy is a technique of scraping the skin with a smooth edged instrument in order to elicit redness of the skin. “Sha” means sand and the presence of the sand-like appearance over the skin indicates local congestion of Qi & blood. A sign of “sha” is the appearance of a white mark when a painful muscle is firmly pressed with the thumb. This type of therapy will improve musculoskeletal pain, assist with lowering fevers and conditions related to the common cold such as lung congestion and cough.

Here acupuncturist Abigail Surasky demonstrates gua sha, a technique used throughout Asia for tight muscles, cold, flu, and stress reduction. The circles on the patient's back are leftov...
